I’m sure, we all are aware of Search Engine Optimization(SEO) which is common to all the webmasters to optimize their site to make it ideal place for search(organic) traffic. SEO is a technique to optimize the site for maximum benefit from search engine.
If you don’t know what are the basic SEO techniques, then it can easily be found by doing a small bit of research on the Internet.
Here is a summary of the basic principles involved in SEO:
#1 You need to have unique content on your site or pages.
#2 You need to have unique title tags and keywords for each of your pages.
#3 You need to have high quality backlinks to your site.
#4 All the pages on your site needs to be linked from your main page. Alternatively, you need to have a valid and clean interlinked pages on your site.
#5 Your permalinks should be based on keywords rather than symbols.
If you have these basic SEO on your website and pages, you will start getting some decent amount of traffic to your site.
But, greediness can be a culprit.Some of us tend to over-optimize our sites using these basic techniques. I warn you, over-optimization can cause a reverse effect on your site. This is the most common mistake by many of us.
Things we see commonly when it comes to over-optimization(7 Side Effects):
#1 Repeating main keywords for your site again and again on the HTML using meta tags as well in the body section of the articles. This is also called “Keyword Stuffing“.
Side Effect– Search engines may mark the pages having too many keywords may be marked as “spam”.
#2 Getting too many backlinks with the same anchor keyword.
Side Effect – Search Engines may get suspicious and mark the pages for reducing the ranking of the site.
#3 Using bold and italic typefaces again and again on the main keyword of the site.
Side Effect – Search engines(especially Google) doesn’t like such techniques to be used extensively. The pages with such techniques will lose their search rankings.
#4 Hiding keywords of your site on the page using HTML manipulations. This will be seen by the search engine bots, but not to visitors.
Side Effect – Google may reduce or wipe your pages from the search engine results.
#5 Getting backlinks form low quality source/site/page.
Side Effect – This will be marked as spam backlinks and is subjected to review from Google for further actions.
#6 Joining low quality link exchange programs, web directory, or unrelated websites.
Side Effect – Reduced PageRanks, and the traffic will be lowered.
#7 Creating footer links with optimized and unnatural anchor texts pointing to internal pages.
Side Effect – Search engines will be suspicious due to such activity. The pages/sites will be wiped of the search engines in extreme cases.
These techniques might work in the short term, and the site might see some incredible change in search rankings and organic traffic.
But, remember that Google is not dumb anymore. After few days, Google bots will flag the website for over-optimization, and a human editor will review the site. If the editor finds over-optimization of the site by manipulating and deceiving the search engines to get huge traffic, then there will be penalty laid on the site. The site may lose its search rankings and traffic from Google.
Remember that Google is the best search engine out there. We webmasters shouldn’t risk our sites for such penalty by over-optimizing the website. Follow the basic SEO guidelines and be patience, your organic traffic will increase gradually. It does takes time, months or even years to get some huge traffic.
