ADSENSE STRESSES ON CORRECT AD PLACEMENTS AS WELL AD PLACEMENTS LEADING TO POLICY VIOLATIONS
Google Adsense always stresses on the fact that placing the ads above the content will lead to a better conversion rate and better clicks. I see people placing ads below the title for the very same reason. This is surely going to increase your conversion rates and revenue. But, are they going to violate the rules and regulations of Adsense? What if these ads are going to break the policy of Adsense? If you are one of the many who place the ads below the title, surrounded by your article content or near the heat areas, then you should also keep in mind the most important part of Adsense policies where it is stressed on accidental clicks leading to policy violations.
List of Ad Placements which can lead to Policy Violations:
1. Placing the ads below the Post Title saying “Today’s Hot Deals”. Here is one shown below:
The above ads indicate that “Today’s hot deals” are indeed the below links shown in the ad.
Never make a title in such a way which gives a clue to the users/readers to click on the ad.
Place a small title above the ads saying “Advertisements or Sponsors” only. Do not use any other words/sentences other than “Advertisements or Sponsors” for the title of the ads.
2. Mimicking the surrounding contents of the Ads as shown below:
3. Placing Ads below your Super cool drop down menu as shown below:
What happens here is, people when hovered on your drop down navigation bar can accidental click the ads. This is absolutely against the policies of Adsense. I repeat users click the ads accidentally will be policy violations. Advertisers are not happy when their ads are clicked accidentally and lose their money.
Here is an interesting discussion on this from Google Adsense Forum.
4. Accidental clicks due to the surrounding layout design of the website as shown below:
This again can lead to accidental clicks from the readers/users. Please don’t design your site in such a way that the ads are placed in a way that would generate accidental clicks. Adsense do not encourage this from the publishers.
5. Placing images and Adsense lined up together as shown:
This is again unacceptable from Google. If this is the case with your site, please don’t align the ads and images together. The above picture misleads the users to click on the ads thinking that the description for the images are the links adjacent. So, it is recommended that you don’t place images and ads associated anywhere on the site. Otherwise you can place the images on your site if the policy is not broken.
6. Ads aligned with or near to the main navigation bar of the site!
This can be very confusing to the users, when they accidentally click the ads thinking that the ad links are navigation links. This happens when the navigation links and ad links are of same property. This is a misuse of Adsense to increase your earnings.
7. Ads placed in a popup window or floating window:
This is again a violation when you display the ads in a pop up window which comes up when the page is loaded or when you click on any link. Adsense doesn’t allow you float the ads anywhere on the blog or site. This leads to enough attention to the users asking or prompting for clicks from them.
8. Placing Ads next to any interactive elements:
When the ads are placed to an interactive element like a video, flash player, game controller, download buttons or any other buttons can lead to policy violations. In turn can lead to immediate ban from Google Adsense. This can be the case with your Facebook like buttons, Twitter or your Fan page buttons.
9. Placing ads in an empty web page:
When an ad or set of ads are placed in a empty page with no contents, can make the users think that these are links for the page and users may innocently click on them. This is a revenue loss to the advertisers and is not entertained by Google. Policy clearly mentions that you are not supposed to place ads in an empty page just for ads.
10. Never place ads too close to any element making it obscured:
This is a common mistake many do when placing their ads. When the ads are not having space for themselves, webmasters try to place the widgets, contents and other elements too cluttered to each other making the “Ads by Google” disappear or look cluttered can lead to policy violations. “Ads by Google” is way of contact to Google.
Conclusion: Any deceiving ad placements will lead to policy violation and will lead to banned account. Please take some precious time of yours to read the Adsense policy and TOS before implementing any ads to your site.
Any ad placement that leads to accidental clicks (maybe near confusing elements or near frequently used user menus or buttons) in turn will make the advertisers unhappy due to the loss of revenue. This in turn will lead to low conversion rates. Unhappy advertisers and low conversion rates will lead to more investigation or closer look by Google. The more the number of low conversions and investigations, the more is the chances of your Adsense account being banned due to invalid clicks or impressions.
Remember that your ads should be absolutely different from the surrounding page contents or design.
If your site gets high conversion rates naturally, then this is because of the happy advertisers in the back-end. This can also make the advertisers place placement ads to your site with better conversion rates. Your main priority should be to satisfy the advertisers interests.
